Bone Densitometry

DXA ( Digital X-ray Absorptiometry) Bone Densitometry is the gold standard for measuring bone mass and detecting Osteoporosis.

Osteoporosis is a bone disorder that can be described as a generalized weakening of the skeleton due to loss of bone and calcium. A skeleton that has been weakened by bone loss is more likely to fracture, and people with osteoporosis have a high incidence of fractures. If all those people with osteoporosis could be identified and treated, a large number of fractures could be prevented.

Until the early 1990s doctors had to rely upon X-rays or bone biopsies to detect osteoporosis. By the time a patient was referred for these tests he or she had almost always had at least one fracture and lost a significant amount of bone. Today a bone densitometry scan can help identify individuals with osteoporosis as well as early osteopenia which would progress to the former if not treated.. This information can help the patient and their doctor make decisions that could prevent further bone loss and future fractures.

Equipment used at NM

n   HOLOGIC QDR 4500W

n  LUNAR PRODIGY

NM Medical Centre possesses the world's latest and Mumbai's first Whole Body True Fan Beam DXA Bone Densitometry (Osteoporosis detection) & whole body fat and lean mass analysis (Obesity & Endocrinal disorders).

The unique fan beam system is 10 times faster than conventional Pencil Beam DXA. True fan beam system can perform a scan in 15 seconds. It provides increased precision & accuracy besides Paediatric Osteoporosis analysis and whole body fat analysis. It also provides lateral spine for Instant vertebral assessment study for precise fracture assessment.

When you go for a Bone Densitometry scan insist on a DXA machine since unlike cheaper portable bone density machines, DXA machines can conduct analysis at the hip, spine, and forearm as recommended by the World Health Organization.

FAQs

Q. What is Bone Densitometry?

Bone Densitometry (BMD) is currently accepted as being a quick, simple, painless examination that is currently the most sensitive screening tool used to detect bone loss in early stages of osteoporosis. It also is the least expensive and most cost effective method for this type of examination.

Q. Is there any radiation involved?

BMD uses an extremely small amount of X-rays (less than 1/10 that used for a chest X-ray) to measure the thickness or density of your bones. The exam takes less than 15 minutes.

Q. How does it work?

Bone Densitometry is a tool used to predict the possibility of a fracture. The resulting measurements of your bone density are compared to what is expected of someone your age, sex, size and ethnic background. It is also compared to what is estimated to be bone density of a young healthy adult of the same sex.
The information allows your doctor to determine if you have osteoporosis and the likelihood of a fracture happening. The best course of treatment can then be determined.
The ability of BMD to predict fractures is undisputed. It is similar to blood pressure predicting strokes and is more effective than using cholesterol to predict heart disease.

  Q. What is the procedure involved in the examination?
A DXA scan involves laying on a couch for approximately 10 minutes while a tiny X-ray detector scans your spine, your hip or both. The scan itself is safe and painless.

Q. Who is at Risk?

In India, 1 in 6 women over 50 years old will break their femur (hip), while 1 in 4 will suffer severe fractures in one or more bones.
The death rate from osteoporosis-related fractures is greater than deaths caused by breast and ovarian cancer combined!

Some authorities believe you may be at risk for osteoporosis if you have one or more of the following:

n    family history of osteoporosis

n    early menopause either natural or surgical

n    amenorrhea (lack of periods) particularly in young woman

n    anti-seizure medicine for many years

n    hyperthyroidism or hyperparathyroidism

n    Cushing's syndrome

n    kidney failure colitis

n    stomach or intestinal surgery

n    high intake of alcohol, coffee, tea or soft drinks

n    heavy smoking

n    low dietary intake of calcium

n    European or Asian ancestry

Preparations

n    No specific preparations are required.

n    Please arrive at the centre 15 minutes prior to your appointment. On your arrival you will be asked to fill out a form which would enable our doctor to
      gauge your medical history.

n    Please bring along previous medical reports especially those of any previous DXA study. This is extremely important for comparative study.

n    It is essential to bring along details of a prior major surgery. We must know if a patient's uterus and ovaries have been removed and if the patient has
      had any metallic implant.

n    You are advised to come in normal, comfortable clothing.

Note

The DXA study cannot be done if you are pregnant.

The study cannot be done for at least 48 hours after a barium meal follow through or a CT Scan of the abdomen as the oral contrast interferes with the results.
